This a service of Green Jobs Network, which since 2008 has connected job seekers to jobs, career resources, and community.

What Are Blue Economy Jobs?
Blue economy jobs are careers that support the sustainable use of ocean and freshwater resources while protecting the health of marine and river ecosystems. These include roles in fishing, marine conservation, renewable energy, coastal tourism, shipping, aquaculture, and other water-based industries.

Externship Spotlight
Spring 2026 National Geographic Society & The Nature Conservancy Freshwater and Community Conservation Externship
(APPLICATION PERIOD CLOSED 1/25/2026)
The application period is open for the Spring 2026 Freshwater and Community Conservation Externship Program.
This is a program of the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy and provides training, mentoring and research experience for people ages 18-25. Over the course of the program, externs explore the knowledge, tools, and relationships they need to seek solutions and take action for nature.
Here are key details about this program:
- 10 hours per week for 8 weeks (February 9 – April 6, 2026)
- Fully remote
- Open to applicants worldwide
- This program is intended for people ages 18–25 to build the knowledge, tools, and relationships needed to seek solutions and take action in their communities.
- Prior work experience or coursework in conservation or environmental topics is not required
- $500 stipend upon program completion.
Externs will gain knowledge and develop skills in areas including:
- Freshwater Conservation Exploration: Examine pressing issues such as freshwater access and quality, watershed protection, river and wetland degradation, and habitat loss, along with emerging solutions.
- Investigative Research: Apply primary and secondary methods to evaluate conservation initiatives and uncover local freshwater challenges.
- Community Engagement & Public Speaking: Interview leaders, conservationists, and residents to highlight the ties between your community and freshwater ecosystems.
- Problem-Solving & Solution Design: Identify gaps in local efforts and craft actionable strategies to strengthen freshwater protection.
- Storytelling for Impact: Develop written, visual, and verbal narratives that inspire audiences to support freshwater conservation.
